The First Fight:

Ross with Trevor Cattouse.

"I feel very strong in my fights and I am learning all the time, anybody who steps into the ring with me is going to have a hard night's work in front of them."

Ross went on to win his first amateur fight on a stoppage in the third and last round. He showed a lot of heart and determination in toppling his taller opponent. Ross received the best boxer of the night award, and the dream had started, he was hooked.

"When I won my first fight I got immense pleasure from being called the winner and hearing people cheering for me, I wanted more."

Ross carried on through the junior ranks and then before turning senior, Doug decided to excel Ross' career further by moving into the London gyms. He decided on The Lynn after talks with Keith Walters the gym secretary and Jim Smith the head trainer who helped Doug in bringing out the best in Ross. Also during this time Doug (who was constantly looking to develop Ross and his future opportunities) introduced another of his former fighters Trevor Cattouse, who once a week offered Ross one to one training at the Jack Beards Professional Gym in Tooting.

It was Doug's plan for Trevor to become Ross' pro trainer when the time was right, understanding that he would need someone to take care of the physical training (as he was getting no younger) to supporting his technical expertise. With the move to The Lynn came Ross' first fight as a senior at sixteen, this was in the London Novices. Ross made it through to the final but got disqualified for ducking too low!? (against a 6ft opponent - Ross being 5ft 6ins at the time). Years went by and Ross was becoming a fighter with good solid skills and was becoming known for his aggression, heart, fitness and non-stop punching.
